Experiencing Rasa with the Sound of Rhythm

Updated: Jan 27, 2023

Rasa is a quintessential element in Indian classical dance. Although the concept can remain the same but the use of rasa in different art forms like Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, Mohiniattam and Odissi may vary in their usage of it. Other than Dance, Rasa, this essence can also be experienced in many other forms of Indian art such as Theater, Music, Cinema and Literature.

When we talk about rasa in Bharatanatyam, it is that relishable mood one goes into when the dancer tries to transport the audience through her art form. When the dancer brings out the Sthayi bhava ( ‘The relishable mood’), it is then when you can appreciate and understand what the message is being conveyed. Most of the time we have seen rasa being executed in different styles of Abhinaya. It is not just restricted here, Rasa can be obtained through various ways which is quite a surprise!

The essence of movements can also be emphasised better when a dancers dances to the sound of Rhythm. The different flavours of rasa can be completely expressed to the audience with the reinforcement of sound. For instance when a dancer is depicting emotions (Bhavas) like the caressing breeze.., the rumbling of thunder.., the pitter patter droplets of rain.., the graceful movements of the leaves that sway along with the wind….

But what if these emotions are elevated with music?!

I believe that they can be conveyed to the audience more effortlessly when there is a rhythmic music in the background. It is not just restricted to these natural rhythmic pattern that is heard from the environment but Rasanubhava can also come from the intricate Swaras that is woven in a Rhythmic pattern. For instance the happiness of Nayika’s emotion can be escalated along with the high sweet notes of the flute or the entrance of a Mighty Asura can cause terror when it is supported by the dramatic beats of the Mrudangam.

When the dancer evokes these expression on sync to these rhythmic pattern it evokes a special emotion amongst the Rasikas (Audience), This is the time when artist herself and the audience together, will get completely immersed bringing out the pure joy of experiencing Rasa!
